PEDIATIMES - There are legitimate reasons why you might want to record phone calls on your Android device, such as for reference during interviews or to have evidence of important conversations. In the past, Android users could rely on third-party call-recording apps to accomplish this task. However, recent changes by Google have made this process more challenging, as the company is taking measures to restrict third-party apps' access to the Accessibility API, which was commonly used for call recording.

During a developer webinar on April 20, Google officially announced its decision to block third-party apps from recording phone calls on Android by revoking permissions to the Accessibility API. This isn't the first time Google has taken such action; previously, they blocked access to real call recording in Android 6, and in Android 10, they prohibited apps from recording calls using the device's microphone. As a result, developers turned to use the Accessibility API as a workaround to record calls without direct access to the phone's microphone, but Google is now putting an end to this method as well, with the changes taking effect on May 11.

Until the changes come into effect, users can still use existing third-party call recording options. However, if you want to prepare for the future, here are some legal ways to record calls on your Android without relying on third-party apps:
  • Check Your Default Call App
Verify if your phone's default call app includes a built-in call recording feature. First-party pre-loaded dialer apps, like those on Google Pixel and Xiaomi phones, have access to the audio source of the phone call (VOICE_CALL). These apps will retain call recording functionality even after May 11.
  • Check Country Support
For Google Pixel users, it's important to note that call recording may be blocked in certain countries, like the United States. Make sure to check if your location supports this feature.
  • Use Speakerphone and Another Device
If your default dialer doesn't have call recording capabilities or if you're in a country where it's unavailable, you can use the speakerphone during calls and record the conversation with another device, such as a secondary smartphone or a voice recorder.
  • Root Your Android (Advanced Option)
Rooting your Android device grants you access to system-level features, allowing call-recording apps to bypass Google's restrictions. However, this process is complex, and it may not be suitable for most users. Additionally, some apps may not work if they detect that your device is rooted.

Remember, it's crucial to follow the laws and regulations related to call recording in your country or state. While these methods offer legal alternatives to third-party apps, always ensure you have the necessary permissions and inform the other party before recording any call.
